The 19-year-old was not included in the lineup for the fourth Test in Ranchi, starting on Friday.
Ahmed’s absence from the team was unrelated to his departure from the tour, as the decision for him to return home came after the XI was announced.
He will depart from India later today, and England will not designate a replacement.
With Ahmed’s exit, England’s traveling squad for the final two Tests now comprises 14 players.
In the fourth Test, the team retains the services of both frontline spinners, Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley.
Ahmed made history as the youngest player to represent England in Test cricket, debuting at 18 against Pakistan in Karachi in December 2022.
Having featured in all three Tests of this tour, the Leicestershire cricketer has taken 11 wickets.
England had opted for three frontline spinners in two of the first three Tests but would unlikely follow suit for the fifth Test in Dharamsala, where seam bowling is expected to be more favorable.
Prior to the series, batter Harry Brook withdrew for personal reasons, and senior spinner Jack Leach returned home after sustaining a knee injury in the first Test.
