The Kansas City Chiefs, reigning Super Bowl champions, have signed punter Matt Araiza, who was cleared from a civil case in December alleging his involvement in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl.
Araiza, 23, was initially drafted by the Buffalo Bills in April 2022 but has yet to make an appearance in an NFL game. Following his mention in the alleged rape case, the Bills released him in the summer of 2022.
Prosecutors announced in December 2022 that they would not pursue criminal charges against Araiza.
Expressing his excitement, Araiza stated, “I am thrilled to continue my NFL career. I am proud to sign with the Chiefs and look forward to the next phase of my career with the Super Bowl champions.”
Throughout the ordeal, Araiza maintained his innocence and expressed eagerness to clear his name. Legal representatives for the alleged victim, identified as Jane Doe, removed Araiza from the civil suit filed in August 2022. Additionally, Araiza dropped a defamation suit against Doe filed in July 2023.
A standout at San Diego State University, Araiza earned the nickname ‘Punt God’ for his remarkable punting skills, setting an NCAA record with a 51.19-yard punting average.
